Finally, we are here at the first week of blog posts! You can post your story anytime this week, but your drop dead deadline is Sunday at midnight. To set the stage for the rest of the semester, remember the following:
- Always bring your hard drive, headphones, and mini-DV tapes to class.
- Plan your stories ahead of time. On Wednesday we will have the first set of editorial meetings. Use your classmates to find sources and stories, but do not rely on them alone. Work your beat.
- Related to this, never leave an interview without asking your person who else you should know about. Use your sources to find your next source.
- Get the appropriate media to accompany your story. Think through how we have talked about the unique attributes of each media tool to sort out when you should take a picture v. gather an audio clip or when to use video. If you have a story that is more informationally driven, see me and we will find a way to data in a graph or table to add value.
- Use online sources smartly. Set a Google alert for keywords related to your blog. Search the PR databases. Localizing a national or regional story is often a great way to find important issue for your readers.
